High Barrier Pharmaceutical Packaging Films For Blister Packs

December 17, 2024

Blister packaging is a commonly used method of packaging pharmaceuticals, especially for the individual packaging of solid medications (e.g. tablets, capsules, etc.). High barrier pharmaceutical packaging films play a crucial role in blister packaging, as they can effectively block moisture, oxygen and light, thus protecting the stability and effectiveness of the drug.

high barrier pharmaceutical packaging films

Below are some common high barrier pharmaceutical packaging films for blister packs and their characteristics:

  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride)Film

– Characteristics: PVC film material has good transparency, molding and mechanical strength.

– Application: It is widely used for blister packaging, but the barrier property of PVC film alone is weak, and usually needs to be compounded with other materials to improve the barrier property.

  • PVC/PVDC(polyvinyl chloride/polyvinylidene chloride)

– Characteristics: PVDC is a high barrier material, and when laminated with PVC, it can significantly improve the barrier to water vapor and oxygen.

– Application: It is suitable for environmentally sensitive pharmaceutical packaging and can effectively extend the shelf life of pharmaceuticals.

  • PVC-PE (polyvinyl chloride-polyethylene)

– Characteristics: By laminating PVC with polyethylene (PE), the toughness and tear resistance of the film can be improved, while maintaining a certain degree of barrier properties.

– Application: Suitable for pharmaceutical packaging that requires a certain degree of flexibility.

  • PE-PET(polyethylene-polyethylene terephthalate)

– Characteristics: The composite film of PE and PET has better barrier properties and mechanical strength, and better heat resistance.

– Application: Suitable for pharmaceutical packaging which is sensitive to light and gas.

– Characteristics: Aclar is a fluoropolymer with very high barrier properties, especially to water vapor and oxygen.

– Application: Used in demanding pharmaceutical packaging, it can effectively protect the stability of pharmaceuticals.

  • Alu-Alu (aluminum-aluminum packaging)

– Characteristics: Composed of two layers of aluminum foil, it has very high barrier properties and can almost completely block gas and moisture.

– Applications: Commonly used for high-value pharmaceuticals (e.g. biopharmaceuticals and certain injectables) to provide optimal protection.

Choosing the right packaging film depends on the characteristics of the drug product, the storage conditions and the market needs. High-barrier pharmaceutical packaging films can effectively protect pharmaceuticals, extend their shelf life, and ensure their safety and efficacy in use. In practice, single materials or composite materials may be selected to achieve the best packaging results according to specific needs.
